Chapter Thirty-Nine

Late Afternoon

Camp David

North of Frederick, Maryland

Drew left on a helicopter maintained by the Navy at Camp David to ferry dignitaries back and forth to Washington. He promised to provide Sarge a full report on his sons and the opportunity to speak with them by phone. Then, if Abbie’s health permitted, Drew and his team would rescue the rest of Sarge’s family.

“Mr. President,” said Ruiz, “I strongly urge you to return to Washington and the safety of the White House. Secret Service can better protect you there.”

Sarge was torn. He wanted desperately to see his boys. He also wanted to race to Philadelphia and kick down doors in search of Julia. He was pulled in many directions, but he was keenly aware that he was still the leader of the free world, and America’s adversaries might use the crisis to their advantage.

He managed a smile as he addressed Ruiz. “I assume Marine One is en route, right?”

“Yes, sir. We’ve dispatched another squadron from Quantico. Those on Monocacy Farm were rendered inoperable.”

Sarge felt remiss for not asking about his security detail. “Have you located all our personnel?”

Ruiz grimaced. “KIA, sir.”

“All of them?” asked Brad.

“Yes, General. The hit team inserted into the woods appeared to have been tracking them from the moment you touched down. Their preparation was impeccable, sadly.”

Sarge rolled his eyes. While the words Ruiz spoke were accurate, they were somewhat insensitive. Sarge had been guilty of being inappropriately frank in the past, such as after the attacks on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon on 9/11. He’d stated that it was the most successful attack on American soil in history. At the moment he uttered those words, the nation was reeling in grief. Nobody wanted to voice kudos to the radical Islamists who orchestrated the horrific act. He regretted the statement despite its accuracy.

“Okay. Ruiz, give us a moment, please,” instructed Sarge. Ruiz quickly exited Aspen Lodge with his aide in tow. Brad wandered behind them and ensured the door was closed. Then he glanced into the kitchen to confirm there weren’t any members of Camp David’s staff eavesdropping.

“We’re alone,” Brad announced as he returned to the living room. Sarge and Donald waited patiently for his return.

Sarge dangled his cross necklace in front of Brad. “Julia and Rose are chipped. We can track them right down to the precise place they’re sitting at the moment.”

“Infallible?” asked Brad, a logical question.

“There are some limitations,” replied Donald. “Like any broadcasting beacon, they require line of sight with the satellite designated to track them. If, for example, they are held deep underground or in any facility surrounded by lead or lots of steel, the beacon will transmit although it might not be picked up by our satellites.”

“We also have to hope the kidnappers didn’t remove the necklaces.”

“Let’s break this down for a moment,” Brad said as he grabbed a bottle of water. “Ruiz seems certain they were missing but then went on to reach the conclusion they’d been kidnapped. Do we trust
